I was surprised by that move too. Originally Lucas announced that he will not release the old episodes as DVD version, a move which was not well received by the old time Star Wars fans.

Lucas probably realised that all his newer episodes were generally considered as "crap" by most of the fans. This recent move was probably to win back his fans and salvage what's remaining of his reputation.

Anyway, I will wait for the price to drop first. After all, I have watched the old trilogy countless times when I was a kid and not in no real hurry to watch the DVD version.
