Echon, what smokest thou? Of course they can, they just can't use
Heavy crossbows. My TN Male Human Thief has no problem with them at all, and yes this is BG1. I'm thinking there must be a bug in the usability flags somewhere.
Iron Greasel, try CLUAing all the Light Crossbows in the game to your Thief, and make a note of which one(s) are flagged against pureclass Thieves.
