Horror works wonders in BG1. I'm not a very big fan of chromatic orb, however. Charm can also be very useful, although you can get some items to cover that instead of spending a spell slot on it. [/QUOTE]Chromatic Orb is extremely useful when paired with Doom because one is a solo Avenger druid. It is truly less than three.
To revisit Sleep... When I played BG the first time I wasn't a seasoned veteran, obviously. I played IWD only after finishing ToB, and it was interesting to revisit low levels and come up with new strategies. I found that Sleep offered excellent bang for my buck, and urge anyone who hasn't used it to try it out.
