Wow I just saw the movie (approximately half an hour ago it ended) and I can say that I'm not that impressed. Rather disappointed I must add. I expected something more after (especially) the first movie, and was waiting for a lot of answers for Reloaded. Some scenes were really really bad IMHO, such as the melodramatic ending/death scene of Trinity and the (too much extended) battle between Neo and Smith.
This movie just left too many questions behind. Questions such as: "How could Smith be outside the Matrix in the body of Bane?" (never explained, only Smith saying "It is true, Mr Anderson" comes close. And why the hell doesn't Neo realise it's Smith? Is there anyone else who has called him Mr Anderson like that?!?!), "I thought the skies were blackened (Animatrix anyone?), but there is still some clear sky left, as we could see. Why didn't the machines use that as an energy source? (CB had the same idea I had)". "Why the hell didn't Smith realise what Neo was up to, when he was taking him over? I mean: he had the eyes of the Oracle after all!" Just a couple of many questions.
To answer some of the questions stated here:
- Legolas: I think you equation idea is pretty good, although I myself had a different theory concerning the end. I thought that Neo had made a deal with the Master Machine: if he would fail, he would die. When Smith took over Neo, Neo obviously failed, and thus had to die according to the deal. What Smith failed to realise however, is that with Neo dying OUTSIDE the Matrix, Smith would die as well. Don't know if this is correct, but it was just a theory
A friend of mine came with a different theory immediately, close to Legolas' equation idea. His solution came from basic science: put a negative and a positive element together and they resolve each other. In other words:
xNeo = 1 and ySmith = -1. With the fusion of both, you get zNeoSmith = xNeo + ySmith = 1 + -1 = 0. Smith signed his own death papers by taking over Neo.
- Human emotions are just words (as said in the movie by the Indian dude in the trainstation). The meaning behind the words is what makes it something. Just because "Love" is a human emotion according to Neo, it doesn't mean the concept of "love" (share a deep bond with someone) isn't reachable by machines.
- Neo could not revive Trinity because first of all Trinity wouldn't let him to (she told him it was her time) and second of all: his 'resurrecting' powers work only in the Matrix, where he can use those powers fully. As you see, Neo cannot fly in the real world, or do super fancy kicks and punches (he had trouble fighting Bane remember?), so he cannot use his ultimate powers outside the Matrix just yet. Exploding Sentinels is just something Uber-special.
