I actually, in about 6-7 times through this game, have never used the guide to get to Durlag's Tower. Just one of those things I guess...
If you complete the plot sequences, you will get all those areas on your map. Make sure, when you can, to pick up all the letters on plot-related NPCs, even if you're not reading them they may update your map.
