'Inopportune'... are you sure? The two occasions when he begins praying are:

1) When the X-Jet is hit by a missile and is in danger of crashing. A prayer in such circumstances sounds like a good idea to me.

2) After Jean's death. A prayer to announce her passage is practically de rigeur.

Leave the poor blue guy alone!
There were actually a couple more times.

1) He is praying when the Professor finally "locks" onto his position. Given his Christian faith and horror he feels about not being able to stop himself from attacking the President...this is very appropriate. He is saying a prayer of repentence.

2) In the plane, he is praying (or saying a rosary - since he appears to be Catholic) when Storm comes back to talk to him. This is before the plane gets hit with the missile.

3) He also says a prayer while he is trying to teleport himself and Storm into Cerebro 2. Since he does not know his destination - there is a chance he could end up inside a wall or could have come in way at the top of the room (with a long fall ahead of them). To teleport "blind" required an act of faith, so he is calling on God to guide him. Again, very appropriate given his Christian faith.
