It has been a while since I read those books, so I have forgotten much of it, but the core of his novels is the Wheel of Time.
This is what I guessed from his books so far. (It has been a while, so it won't be very accurate, but you will get the main point). Before I start, I forgot the name of the Forsaken's boss, so I will call him the "Dark one".
In the first age, Both side side of the True Source where pure, and the Dark One was sealed in some kind of pocket dimension. And people had no idea what a war was.
Then, the woman now know as Lanfear, along with some other people, released the Dark One, this had the effect of starting a war, Lews Terrin Tellamon (something like that) took 100 of his fellow saidin user, Defeated the dark one and resealed him, but in a weaker prison. This also had the effect of currupting Saidin.
Years later, The Dark one's prison weaken, so the forsaken are able to free themselves, this is where the novels start.
Some time later, Rand, in a big ritual, manage to clensen Saidin.
So you see, many time in the novels themselves, and sometimes in the intro/endings, Robert Jordan tell us how the people have forgotten much about the other ages, and the Wheel will Turn for Eternity. He also tell us that every time The Wheel complete a turn, the story repeat itself, and how at first what is Actions become stories, and stories becomes legends, legends become myth and are forgotten.
So my guess is that Rand will defeat the Dark one and all his forsaken, this time completely resealing the Dark One in his Pocket Dimension, will unite the world and peace will last for a long time, this will be a new golden age, people will rediscover what they forgot about the True Source, and everything will be perfect, until a woman and some of her friends will find a strange place, where saidin and saidar are as one, and they will begin trying to breach throught that place to access that strange power...
Edit: As for Rand himself, it has been hinted that he most die, but I do not believe that, the hints given are too big, where would be the surprise? But then again, maybe Robert Jordan knew we would be thinking this, and so he will really kill Rand...
