Midichlorians just provided a way to identify Anakin as being the "one who will bring balance to the force". What else was there to go on? "Hey this kid has to be the one! He won a pod race!"
A couple inconsistencies I've noticed since taking another look at episodes 4 and 5:
In episode 4, Obi-Wan doesn't act like he recognizes R2 or C3PO. Even says something like not ever remebering ever owning a droid... what about R4?
In episode 5, Obi-Wan's spirit says something about Yoda having been his Master... what about QuiGon?
