I think perhaps you are wrong. Maybe a coincidence but recently in the norwegian newspapers(I`m from Norway) I read that 100 authors from all over the world had voted for the best book(s) ever. I think it was about 50 books listed and as you said LOTR was not mentioned. Btw no fantasy was. Don Quijote was voted as the BEST book ever!
