WHOA!!!! I was just going to post a new thread about this splendid movie!
On New Year's Eve, my boyfriend and I decided to stay in and rent some movies. We were at the counter to pay, when his eye suddenly fell on this movie. We read the blurb and thought it might be nice, even though we'd never heard of it before, so we decided to rent that one as well.
I can only advice you guys to RUN to the videoshop NOW and do the same
The scenery and landscapes are stunningly beautiful, the actors are VERY good, the plot is nerve-wrecking, very clever and well-written, the fighting scenes are amazing, and the way it is filmed is highly original and refreshing (slo-mo and stills, really cool-looking!). I loved it.
For those of you who (like me) never heard of this movie before, it's a French production (original title = Le Pacte Des Loups) spoken in French (our version had subtitles in Dutch, though the French was actually quite understandable). It's set in 18th century France, where a mysterious beast roams free in a remote area, killing men, women and children alike. The King sends a taxidermist/biologist/traveller ("Le Chevalier")and his Indian companion Mani to investigate. Some say the beast is an ordinary wolf, some fear it's unnatural, possibly a werewolf. Others imply the Beast is a punishment sent by God. As the Chevalier arrives and meets the local nobles and authorities as well as the countryfolk, the web of intrigue slooowly starts to unfurl, and carries the protagonists to a bloodcurdling denouement.
One of the best movies I've seen in ages!
