Oddly enough, the film had nothing to do with the Tolkien family.The film rights to Lord of the Rings had already been sold by Tolkien to that Bakshi animator guy, and from then on to one Samuel Zaentz; Wingnut Films (Peter Jackson's guys) bought the rights from that chap, and from there got backing from New Line Cinema after turning Miramax down (Miramax only wanted one 2-hour film).
Ol' Chris Tolkien has, so the rumourmill goes, been trying to find a way to legally prevent the film's release - so far unsuccessfully. The entire Tolkien family seems to have this aversion to publicity...
