Saving Throws are not like THAC0: There is no such thing as a "Critical Save" or "Critical Fail." If your Save is 1 or lower, even a roll of 1 will be sufficient to make your Save, barring any negative Save modifiers carried by the spell in question. A roll of 20 might always guarantee making your Save in P&P, but not Baldur's Gate.
Also to be considered is the (rare) Potion of Magic Protection, which states that during its time of effect, all Saves are made automatically.
