a natural 20 will always succeed in a saving throw, but that's the only "by the book" way to guarantee a successful save. (although the 1st edition DMG said quite plainly if you have to bend, break, or completely rewrite the rules to have a fun game, go for it, which may be what they had in mind)
My preferred use for Otilukes Resilient Sphere was to use it on an NPC and then poison them, as spell or weapon damage isn't taken, but poison damage is.
