First book is called 'Northern Lights', the second 'The Subtle Knife'.
At the beginning of Northern Lights the principle character doesn't seem all that well drawn... but carry on reading! I'm not telling anything else about these books - but the concept and realisation are superb. READ IT! READ IT! READ IT! You'll be glad you did!
