Through the first 2-3 books Rand defeats the "Dark One" at the climax..Here's the question..
Are these the Forsaken pretending to be the Dark One (I'd think this would be deadly for them), The Forsaken that Rand BELIEVES is the Dark One (thus the story would be told from what Rand percieves), The Forsaken taken over by the Dark One (as in the Dark One manifesting his power into them, and breaking a seal each time. Rather unlikely, because he'd be a lot more powerful than Rand, but he's been in the Bore a long time so..) or the Forsaken taking the Dark One's guise under his command?
Its very strange because early on in the first few books Rand sees a figure with Fiery Eyes even after killing the first Forsaken in Eye of the World(presumed to be Balthamel or Aginor, cant remember) and the second in the Great Hunt (Ishamael) and the others later on. Who whos this fellow?

The series is so damn difficult to understand..brilliant observation with the Snakes and Foxes though.. I never noticed it.

What is Padan Fain's significance as it goes along? Like why doesnt Rand just zap him with balefire? Or Mazrim Tiam, presumed to be Demandred(?)..
Does Lews Therin go away now that Rand has cleansed the source? What about the rouge Asha'Man..?

ARGH! So many questions, and I still dont have all of them because I've forgotten them all in the long time since reading Winter's Heart.

LOL many questions indeed, that's one of the best things about these books, they give you so much to think about
Ok, the one Rand thinks is the Dark One is Ishamael. Ishamael is kind of crazy, and he halfway thinks he's the dark one himself. He was never properly bound in the seal like the others, best guess is that in 40 year spans he was free, or mostly free, of the prison for a while. He was Hawkwings advosor that got him to hate Aes Sedai, etc. Ishy likes to use the True Power a lot, and this tends to do weird things to your eyes and to your mind. Rand didn't actually kill him in the second book, he had to fight him again in the third one to finish him off. The one with fiery eyes in the first book was Ishamael too. And yes, the other forsaken mentioned a few times how dangerous it was for Ishy to be sounding like the Dark One, but that didn't stop him. He gave a lot of hints that he was the dark one, but never named himself so. He did call himself Ba'alzamon, which is what the Trollocs called him during the Trolloc wars (he was free of the seal to gather the dread lords and start those wars).

Padan Fain is evil in all sorts of ways. He's a darkfriend, and was 'changed' by the dark one himself, then after that Mordeth came to dwell in him as well, and he has some sort of connection with Machin Shin too. Blend all of these evils together, and he's someone pretty scary. He doesn't let himself be seen now that they know how dangerous he is, so it's not so simple as balefiring him.

As far as Taim...Rand doesn't know he's demandred. Lews Therin seems to though.
I think Logain may wind up being the one to take care of him. I doubt Lews Therin will go away, but it's too soon to tell. As far as rouge Ash'a'man, there aren't any left. Dashiva was the last one, and he was actually Osan'gar, and was killed when that hill disappeared.
