Hmmm... Well, good. I'm glad that it's working for you. I guess that I just think of what you described above as starting out slow.
What I consider a fast start is something like the "Legion of Videssos" series by Harry Turtledove. The premise is that a Roman Legion (well...actually a small, scout legion) is fighting in Gaul and is ambushed by some Gaelic tribes. Both the Gaelic leader and the Tribune of the Legion have these weird swords engraved with Druidic runes. When they clash and their blades cross, everyone in the Roman Legion along with the Gaelic leader are transported to another world. A world where magic lives and infantry is unheard of. Well...you can imagine how Roman infantry (perhaps the best the world has ever known) would make an impact in that kind of situation.
That is a *real* fast start!
