I totally agree with you regarding your comment concering Tolkien's use of detail. Some might see it as excessive...however, it *does* give you a very good feel for the landscape surrounding the story as well as the characters themselves.
When I initially read this trilogy, I was pretty young (12 or 13"ish") and I think that the use of detail bored me at the time. I'm thinking that perhaps a re-read now (years later) might garner more interest for me. I tried reading the Simarillion (sp.?) after I finished LotRs the first time and it bored me so that I couldn't even get through the first quarter of the story.
So, maybe someone can tell me...what is the Simarillion about and how does it tie in to LotR...or doesn't it tie-in at all? Thanks!
