Tolkien's writing style doesn't lend itself to easy reading (kind of like Anne Rice) but his writing talents are unquestioned.
I too found it difficult to read the Silmarillion (the first Tolkien book I read), then again I was about 9 at the time.
Once I got to the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, I was a total convert.
