Also try to get hold of anything by David Gemmel (Drenai Series, Druss novels etc), Stephen Lawhead (Dragon King Trilogy,the Pendragon cycle,and various others),Peter Moorwood (Viking Samurai society with spring loaded pistols (15ft effective range though)nice author, illustrated his own work), J.R.R.Tolkien (you must have heard of him), Sheri.S.Tepper (The True Game Trilogy is all I've ever found),Robert.E.Howard(Conan stories), Ursula Le Guin (Wizard of Earthsea Trilogy, The Left Hand of Darkness etc) and the bloke who wrote the "Fahrd and the Grey Mouser" stories.
These are all great reading.
