If they don't see you kill the cube, they don't get hostile, but if they do, even Torey the dress wearer gets hostile, and you can't kill him. Of course, the cubes are hostile, so if you get stuck engaging on that corner, where you enter the chamber with Torey, you're in for the fight of your life.
