Perhaps it's just nostalgia, but the BG2 interface has nothing on BG1 to me. In fact, BG2 has nothing on BG1 in several other aspects as well.
(Why can't anyone do a version of BG2 with the BG1 interface, and get Kevin Michael Richardson to re-do the narration while you're at it!)
