Yes you can solo it, for the most part without dying also. However, you have to know where you're going and go there slowly, with a solid character.
It's easier to team up, and even then you can expect to die a couple of times along the way.
The most important thing to remember is there's no reason to keep going further down if you're still having trouble with the creatures on your current level.
