The downside of a melee is that you get a LOT of effects and actions, which
will cause serious lag and likely time out most of the competitors.
The downside of class-specific combat is that multiclassed characters belong to several, or none of the groups. The other downside is that you don't get the rock-scissors-paper effect for comparison. The best mage can be nothing compared to a decent rogue, but we'd never know (about magic, brownies have an unfair advantage in that they're much harder to target with the mouse

)
I'm all for one on one combat, although we may want restrictions on Bigby's, Harm, Dev. Crit, Timestop and IGMS primarily. Or put some on items. Or just allow it all. It's all fine with me, as long as you've given it some thought.
Finally, the level issue.
We can make categories to determine the best of each level group (1-10,11-20,21-30,31-40 for example) and pit those against eachother, but we're looking for the best of the best. Not the best of the worst. So just bring your level 40
Other categories could be by armor class, attack bonus, hit points, amount of strength, and so on.
Or we do away with categories and make it totally random. I'd like that actually, you could be facing a level 40 wizard or a level 20 fighter, be lucky or not, it's all part of the game.
