It happens a lot. More so in areas with greater intrinsic lag such as the YP inn has because of its many npcs.
It is also more common with merchants who already have a lot of stuff in their inventory. The theory is that every time you buy/sell the merchant's inventory needs to be reworked, and the more is in there the more it adds to the lag. When the lag peaks, you get disconnected.
