Considering they did release a demonstration for NeverWinter Nights (original), it is a little surprising. I do not remember if a demonstration model was released for the latest edition of The Elder Scrolls, or even (as far back as) Knights Of The Old Republic II. Usually demonstration models are churned out to incite interest and curiosity for those who may or may not be willing to (legally) purchase the game. I know most MMO games do not have a "demonstration" per se, but instead give a few days (up to two weeks) worth of free playing time for potential users (read: addicts or junkies to the digitial drug) to give the game a thorough workout. For a game that is relying heavily on internet hype (read: today's version of word of mouth) to sell itself, the lack of a playable demonstration model is distinctly disturbing and suspect.
Something else to figure in is the majority of discussions about the game tend to become very polarized VERY quickly. Not that such has not happened before, but this is not the latest edition of Grand Theft Auto: controversy is not this game's bread and butter. With all the ranting and raving, verbal jousting and jostling going on, one would think they could put an end to a host of the issues by just creating something for aspiring players to get a hold of and experience for themselves. Not so in the case of NeverWinter Nights 2. The only demonstrations players can get are downloadable movies - nothing which allows you to interact with the game at all. Sure, quite a few games have survived and thrived without the general public having a chance to stick their fingers in the gears before the release date. Some manufactures almost insist on keeping the public in the dark until a few moments before the project is due to come out just to keep up the suspense. However, given the fact the original game did give players an opportunity to experiment ahead of time, and the sheer amount of arguements concerning "completion" of the engine, the lack of a playable demonstration model is merely one of many concerns hosts of players have.
We will see what happens when it does finally come out.
