The game carries a file (for BG2 it's called Portrait.2da, I don't know if they use the same name for BG1) that tells the game what portrait to use for an NPC that's had his/her portrait stolen by the PC. I believe Edwin's pic might change to Xan's, or some such. (And then if you recuit Xan as well, he would probably get that Elf portait used by Deder, etc.)
