This depends on the amount of spell casting you want.
Obviously if you want more spell power then you will have more levels as a Bard.
If you want more fighting capability then you'll want more levels as a fighter
In any event, I would make sure you have at least 4 levels as a fighter.
I would also take my first level as a Bard (for the skill points). Additionally I'd take at least one more level as a Bard at character level 16+ so that you can plow-in skill points into Tumble without the skill point penalty (to a native 20 points for a +4 to AC) and Use Magic Device (to a minimum of 10 points).
The fighter should also be planned to receive weapon specialization in what ever weapon you like best (you'll need to have the feat weapon focus in that weapon AND have the appropriate base attack, AND you'll need to have a feat selection at the point you can choose weapon specialization).
I personally like at least enough levels of Bard to cast wounding whispers - which can help hurt really difficult opponents where you might not otherwise be able to.
