Try to avoid having a stat below 10. At 10, yo get no bonus but also no penalty. Below 10, you take a -1 penalty to any check using that stat. With INT, you will also get less skill points, which hurts even a fighter.
You will get extra stat points every 5 levels, and you will get many items/potions to boost them as well.
