I figured out my other problem. I think it has to do with the way I removed them from my party.
When I removed the henchmen I just selected "remove from party" from the radial menu, I never talked to them and asked them to leave. So when I ask them to join with me again, they think they're already a member of a (my) party, so they say they've got another master.
Must just be a glitch in the scripting or something.
