Get yourself familiair a bit with 3rd edition D&D rules, if you aren't already. It's quite different from 2nd edition, for the numbers there's a new rule: the higher the better (unless penalties of course), higher AC is better protection, higher attack is better chance to hit. THAC0's gone now.

Try to have a goal for what your character should look like and what he should be doing. Besides classes there are a lot of choices to be made on level up so if you prepare before you won't be making decisions you regret later.

That's all I can think of, I haven't played much in the game.
