Forget the old dual and multi-class system for NWN - that was 2nd edition rules, NWN is 3rd edition. The way is works is this: whenever you gain enough experience to go up a level, you can either add another level of skill to an existing class OR take a level in a new class. The xp required to gain a new level is now TOTALLY class independent is determined by the total levels of all classes. For example, a ftr 5/ mage 4 and a rogue 8 / mage 2 require exactly the same xp to add another level. The manner in which you add levels in more than one class is totally up to you. You can build a monk 9 and then start adding cleric levels OR you can build a monk 5 / cleric 4 by alternating levels in each. Up to you.

The only exception is IF neither of the classes is a PREFERRED class for that character's race and the levels in each class are more than 2 (?) levels apart. For example, dwarves have fighter as a prefered class, so if you are building a multi-class dwarven fighter / anything else you don't need to pay attention to the diference in levels. If on the other hand you want to build a dwarven cleric / rogue then you DO need to keep an eye on the difference in the number of levels in each class or you suffer an XP penalty.
