Not boring - it just doesn't seem "right" (except possibly a small shield - but there aren't to many good small shields). I could see it for the Protector shield though (which gives a 5 damage soak). (Large and tower shields really only roleplay with Fighters, Paladins, and Clerics.)
Still though, Druids have excellent defensive magic - what they don't have is good offensive melee capability (it isn't bad, but it isn't good either). In this respect a scythe adds good offensive melee capability without compromising the ability to hit. As an added bonus it gives two types of damage AND it offers the occasional awesome critical (which really puts a smile on your face when it happens). (Not only that there are two outstanding Scythes available in the game.)
