Have you tried Six's suggestions Hawkins?
If they didn't work, you could download Gatekeeper, it's a really easy to use editor for BG1 save games and characters. Using GK you could manually insert the Tomes into your character's inventory. Only if you promise these nice people that you won't use it to cheat on any of the other items, of course.
