Why a WIZARD? Because...
Their primary stat is INT so you get more skill points without weakening your class stat
They get High lvl spells a turn Earlier
You can adapt to every situation - a locked chest? memerize knock rest, and cast. Immune to magic baddies - cast buffing spells, summon a Vrock transform to Balor - kick @^^. Can't pick a lock? cast cats grace a couple of times and try again.
You get free metamagic feats so you can spend your other feat points in a better way.
All this said Sorcerers are still very powerful and a great dual combo with bards or paladins
