I hadn't tried it since the latest patch or two because I'd become so set in my "two-handed axe" ways, so I tried it today, and it seems to work fine, but I'm not using the same configuration I was then.
If I remember, the way I did it before was with an axe and shield in one slot and an axe(the same axe) and hammer in another slot. When I'd use either combo, the secondary item (shield and hammer) would disappear from both slots, so maybe it had something to do with using the same weapon in two different combos?
