In almost every popular firewall for personal use (ZoneAlarm, Tiny etc.) you are able to configure how the firewall will react to requests not matching to any rule.
Change the configuration for those requests to something like *ask* (at least for the update period) and you are able to deny or allow specific requests via message box.
This will allow the autoupdater to function properly.
