If you're a fighter, why to bother with all this, just to get his staff (it isn't that "great" anyway, though has snazzy look)? As a fighter I simply used "Improved Disarm" on him and got the staff, then used it to beat him up. Beaten by his very own staff. Kept it as a trinket, useless to me really.
