Are you in chapter 4 at Beorunna's Well? If so then you'll be using Barum in the trading post to forge your items. In chapter 1 at the shining knight in the city core, you can use Marrok to forge you weapons too. If you're in chapter one, then the magical greatsword must be +1 with some adamantite to make you the harbringer kin +1 sword. If you're in chapter 4 with Barum, then the magical greatsword must be +3 in order to create the harbringer kin +3. A +2 sword will not do in either situation, a +3 sword will not do in chapter 1 (you won't find one anyway!) and a +1 sword won't do in chapter 4.
