It modifies your "Healing Kit" performance vis-a-vis the DC of the poison or disease. For example, a powerful disease might have a DC of 30. If you had a 10 in heal and a +6 kit, you'd add 16 (10 + 6) to your "heal" roll, which means you'd be successful on a 14 or better. This would mean you healed between 30 and 36 HP, plus cured the disease.
A high score in this skill is important in combat against creatures that can disease or poison you, such as mummies or dire spiders. Antidotes and cure disease potions & scrolls are great, but expensive and narrowly focused. A successful use of a heal kit will give you hit points AND cure you.
