as hard as it is to start with a sorcerer (especially if you don't use a 'tank' henchman; i never used anyone except linu), by the end of the game these guys can unleash just massive amounts of damage.
the first point when it get's a lot easier is level 10, when you can get animate dead - skeleton chieftins are awesome companions at that point in the game. it gets even better later with summon creature VII and higher which summon an elemental. and for the tougher fights there's the mighty mordenkeinen's sword. and if you run into a spell resistant enemy you can use tenser's transformation or even shapechange (i'm kinda sorry i didn't give this spell a try, it says you can turn into a dragon!) and just melee it out.
but the main strength of the sorcerer are the offensive spells - cone of cold and ice storm are very effective for their level, especially against groups of enemies, just watch out for your henchman/familiar/summon. chain lightning and horrid wilting get rid of this problem though. and then there's meteor swarm and of course time stop . combination of these two spells made two of the near-end 'boss' fights a joke. the two guardians before the inner sanctum in the end - i just stood between them, timestoped and rained meteors on them, than finished with two chain lightnings and it was over. the wizard responsible for the plague you fight a little earlier, he starts the battle with a time stop and casts some pathetic spells during it. i immediately showed him how it's done . time stop, three meteor swarms and a chain lightning, his 'immortality' wasn't all that impressive... and the dragons in general were a joke; except for once when i accidently walked into the red dragons breath they never even touched me.
so from my experience with the sorcerer and from what i've read on this and other forums about melee fighting charecters, it seems to me that spellcasters have an easier time in the big 'boss' battles.
i really recommend the sorcerer .
