I certainly would not dilute a casting class by mixing, though. That 1 or 2 levels of Fighter isn't worth the level 8 or 9 spell it will cost...

Do you "still spell?" Taking one level of fighter at the beginning, thus obtaining a number of future complementary feats, like Heavy Armour, Martial Weapon and Shield, plus taking such feats as Cleave and/or Exotic Weapons... Plus I like Disarm...
You'd be surprised how much better your survivability as a mage is. The price is that you're functionally one spell-level behind the pack. But the nice thing is that you can switch back-and forth for the cost of one 9th level spell and one 8th level spell. Most of which are all-or-nothing in their application.
