My most successful character way back when I played the paper-based game was a half-elven fighter/mage, but then I came down with "ranger-sickness" for a long time before discovering the joys of being a human paladin.
What's interesting is whether we play characters which reinforce some part of our character that we would like to be or which are completely the opposite of how we normally are (its the former for me). Such as a rabbit or smurf
