Breasplates are one of the best medium armours there is. Low weight, and have a pretty high Dex modifier. It allows movement, easy to upgrade to an expansive metal.. Which I donīt think will be taht easy afterall.. Remember the Drizzt books? "A kings ransom on a common guard.."
Druids do suffer from the Hide armour since it has very low dex. Choosing your armour is importatn due to class. A fighter has to look for both dex and and how to maximise ac. An elven fighter with high dex gets a better AC with a Breastplate then if he wears a Fullplate! So they are useful the medium armours indeed.
