There are a couple of spots where tunnel passages kind of hide on you -- you may have been caught by one of those. I also don't remember if you have to go back to the surface and come back down again to get to a different tunnel section... seems to me there's something like that. Shinwiki is up in another hut.
Hmmm... has anyone tried climbing up Shinwiki's outside posts (like the stick room in Boogre Caves)?
BTW, if you *don't* see the shaman, you do miss out on a couple of things: some nice XP (from an encounter he sends you on), a decent spear, and the 5HP bonus from the sacred Toadem. Those 5HP are kind of nice at that stage of the game...
