I can't offer any suggestions on the crashing problem but I'm sure that some of the regulars with excellent techie advice will be along soon.
There is no real advantage to rerolling a level up. There are lots of threads on this particular topic if you care to ferret around for them. The game has it's own strange logic and while I will agree that it would have been a wise move to reward players at each level up that isn't quite how W&W works. In the long run it all works out. Rerolling tends to just increase your need to reroll every time. It isn't worth the time and effort. By the time you get well into the game, you're characters will develop very nicely without any rerolling.
