Adding up a bunch of 6s, 7s, 12s, and 13s is not easy, for sure. Try the lazy man's way: add up tens, and the deviation from it. So 6,7,12,13 becomes -4, -3, 2, 3, making an easy -2 overall. Out of those four scores, the total is 38 (40 - 2).
But I agree -- it can get obnoxiously boring. I tend not to last very long, and as has been pointed out, after a few levels, it doesn't matter any more.
About the only thing I'd suggest is to try to make sure all characters are guild-worthy. That's a score of 10 in all attributes except fortitude, which needs a 12. With those scores, you can qualify for any class advancement.
Without those minimum scores, you're like the Den of Thieves, who are not-so-patiently waiting for their next level so the last three goombas can join the priests' guild. Just one more ability point and they'll all meet the minimum requirements.
