Cerek, having gone from a BG II marathon back to the prelude myself, I know a lot of it must seem like a non-linear goose-chase. The best advice I can give you in this respect is to always 'nudge' all four sides of any map you explore. By this, I mean clicking the wheel on the edge of a map, just to open up that area for whenever you decide to visit it, even if it's not on your agenda for a very long time. I am sure the basilisk forest will show up if you do this around the eastern areas of the sword coast - it's one map north of Gullykin, or one map east of the temple near Beregost, to be precise.
I found this site particularly useful on my adventures -
http://www.pottsland.com/baldur - it has a lot of tidbits that just serve to refresh your memory if you feel like you've momentarily lost the plot.
Have fun, and let us know how it all goes
