The patch doesn't fix this. It's the Baldurdash BG1 fixpack that fixes it, I believe. (

The Maulers of the Undermountain love taking everybody out, including Gorpal Hind and his gang, innocent (blue-circled) bystanders, and even the innkeeper. If you keep the fighting confined to the lower area around the back staircase, you have a better chance of keeping everyone alive. (Of course, as Firestormalpha mentioned, you can always go up to the second floor, come back downstairs, and everyone will magically resurrect themselves and the quest can start again. That is, unless you've installed the fixpack.)
The Helm and Cloak isn't the only place to sleep in the city. Try the Three Old Kegs if you want some adventure.
