I don't think the Vine of Life spell was as good as it could have been. Let it save you once in a battle, and you're dust and bones on the next hit. Perhaps it might be nice when opening trapped chests, though (just thought of that one!).
As for whirling dervish, it's the vine mass-destruction spell. I guess they tried to think of an appropriate storm spell and couldn't come up with anything better than "leaf blower" or "pollen storm" (where your enemies suffered allergic reactions, potentially causing their deaths). It's nice, but it's directional, which means you have to aim it just right. And it bounces off walls, too, which means it can come back at you (IIRC).
All in all, they're not the most valuable spells for sure, but I'd still learn 'em while I can. Otherwise, I can't pick 'em up until I'm a zenmaster.
