Depending on the character involved, you may not be able to fit through the opening. Has to be someone small, like a pixie, rattling, or Ghourk, IIRC. Larger characters just get stuck, and then vanish (or reverse time) become the only options.
And just to mention the obvious, when you save before jumping, save in a different place from your last save game, in case you need to go back to it...
